NJYC is about academic instruction, work experience, and personal/career counseling - ultimately leading to youth empowerment. We work intensely with each individual, addressing needs equitably while developing a familial group dynamic. Many of our youth come away from their experience feeling like part of an extended family - and they stay connected with us for years!
Academics
New Jersey Youth Corps staff design individual education plans for each member. Members spend half their time in classes geared to helping them earn an HSE (High School Equivalency). In class, they work in large and small groups and receive individual assistance as necessary. Instruction is also incorporated into their community-based Service Learning projects.
WORK EXPERIENCE/Service Learning
The New Jersey Youth Corps has Corps members participate in community-based Service Learning Projects. The projects fulfill an unmet need in the community and provide controlled, supervised work situations that allow Corpsmembers to develop the maturity and skills necessary to become a better candidate for employment.
Personal/Career Counseling
The New Jersey Youth Corps provides on-going counseling intended to help Corpsmembers overcome barriers to personal, academic and employment success. They learn skills that will make them more employable and participate in activities designed to help them develop better self-esteem, clarify their values and develop leadership skills. Additionally - through our NJYC Recognizing Individuals Struggles and Experiences (NJYC-RISE) grant funding, we are addressing issues of substance abuse and mental health - to educate, inform and reduce the stigma of said issues so that our youth can begin to feel empowered to start making changes in their lives.
Youth Empowerment
Our youth are motivated by a common theme: They want to change the minds of what people think of them. Through mindful conversations and challenging work, NJYC staff guide youth toward a future where they are empowered to believe they can achieve what they once thought was impossible.
